The photo report entitled ‘Blues in the night’ was taken in 2023 on the occasion of my first trip to Mississippi.
The sequence of photos aims to capture the atmosphere of the blues festival that takes place in the Mississippi Delta, inspired by the charm of the night silence interrupted only by enveloping music.

For me, seeing the places of racial segregation in the Mississippi Delta was like getting punched in the face; The harsh reality of those stories of injustice and discrimination has left an indelible imprint on my mind.

But at the same time, discovering the blues was like receiving a lightning flash in the face.
The poignant notes of that authentic music resonated within me, shaking my emotions and opening a window on a new world made of pain and hope.

I tried, like the notes of ‘Blues in the night’, to convey the passion for the blues and the joy of living but also a melancholy for a world that no longer exists.

Through the stages of the journey in the Mississippi Delta, from Memphis to Clarksdale to Helena, up to the arrival in Jackson, everything brings back to the deep roots of blues music and its connection with the history and culture of the place.
The Mississippi Delta, despite its intrinsic beauty, is now one of the poorest areas of America, a reality that adds an extra layer of meaning and complexity to the night images.
In the last photograph taken of Jackson, if we close our eyes we can relive the courage of the civil rights protesters of 1961, who defied segregation in Grayhound buses, mixing memories and music in the night scenario.

‘Blues in the night’ represents a visual hymn to the unifying power of music, to the beauty of a place that does not want to give up and that continues to sing its blues soul under the dark sky of Mississippi.
