On the day of our arrival in Homa Bay, a small town on Lake Victoria in Kenya, Bishop Dominc Ochoo invited us to the funeral of his wife’s sister.

Giada and I accepted the invitation and the next day, October 25th, we set off on the road.

Two hours of dirty road to get to what, for many Africans, represents the most important holiday of their life: a funeral.

More than 400 guests were arriving from all over Africa.

It wasa Christian funeral but as you will see from the photos, there were also some traditional aspects.

The photos taken in 2009 are my first realisation of how death is treated elsewhere in world within the various civil and religious communities.
